Why Do We Feel Anxious in the Dark?

Have you ever suddenly felt alert, restless, or even afraid when in a dark place? Even if logically we know the room is safe, our hearts still race for no clear reason. But is it really without reason?

Since childhood, many of us have been taught that darkness is frightening. But it turns out, the feeling of anxiety in the dark is not just about imagination or childhood experiences, but is related to something deeper biologically, psychologically, and spiritually.

Darkness Removes Control

When the lights go out or night falls, the sense of sight that we rely on most suddenly becomes limited. We cannot see what is in front of us. This triggers a feeling of insecurity because the brain loses control and prediction over the environment.

Isaiah 9:2 says, โ€œThe people walking in darkness have seen a great light.โ€ Darkness is symbolically often associated with ignorance, sin, or suffering. So it is no wonder, in the human soul, darkness often represents something threatening.

Darkness Reveals Deepest Fears

When everything is dark and silent, there are no distractions. The mind becomes more active, often bringing up fears of things unseen both literally and spiritually. It could be about the future, loneliness, or even guilt.

John 3:19 states, โ€œ…people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil.โ€ Darkness is not only an external condition, but can be a symbol of the condition of the heart. In the dark, many people actually struggle with shadows within themselves.

But God Is Not Afraid of the Dark

Psalm 139:11-12 offers great comfort: โ€œIf I say, โ€˜Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,โ€™ even the darkness is not dark to Youโ€ฆโ€ This means, God remains present and sovereign even in the darkest darkness.

We may be anxious in the dark, but God never loses direction. Even amid uncertainty, He remains in control.

Conclusion: Darkness Is Not the End

Fear of the dark is a human reaction. But as believers, we are invited to replace fear with trust. Because God’s light never goes out, even in the darkest night.
