Discipleship is not merely a weekly activity at church or a routine Bible class, but a life process. When Jesus said, “Follow Me” to His disciples, He was not offering just theological information, but a journey of total life transformation. Discipleship is a call to live like Christ, not just to know about Christ.
In a world full of distractions and temptations, it is very easy to lose spiritual direction. This is where discipleship becomes important. Through discipleship, we learn to grow in Christ’s character, have a strong foundation of faith, and live in truth. Paul advised Timothy, “What you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others” (2 Timothy 2:2). This shows that discipleship is not just about oneself, but about passing on the life of Christ to others.
Discipleship is not for “super spiritual” people, but for all followers of Christ. Even Peter, who denied Jesus three times, was still used by God to disciple many people. We need others to help us grow, challenge us when we begin to weaken, and encourage us when we start to retreat. Jesus Himself spent more time with His 12 disciples than with the large crowds. That was no coincidence; it was an intentional pattern.
Discipleship also helps us to live authentically. In discipleship, we learn to open our lives, pray for one another, strengthen each other, and live in a building community. As it is written in Proverbs 27:17, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” We were not created to walk alone in faith. We need others to see aspects of our lives that might escape our own attention.
So, why do we need discipleship? Because healthy faith does not happen by chance, but is formed through healthy relationships, consistent spiritual disciplines, and guidance from those who have walked with the Lord before us. Discipleship is God’s tool to shape us to be like Jesus, one step at a time, day by day.
