Should I Always Give In?

We often hear the advice “it’s better to give in than to argue.” But in real life, especially when we feel right or treated unfairly, giving in can feel like a defeat. The question is: does God really want us to always give in?

Jesus said in Matthew 5:39, “Do not resist an evil person. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.” This is not an invitation to be a passive victim, but a call to respond to injustice with love, not retaliation.

But giving in does not mean allowing evil to continue. In Galatians 6:1-2, Paul advises the church to gently restore one another in love and carry each other’s burdens. This means, if we see wrongdoing, we are not called to remain silent, but to act with humility and love, not with anger or harm.

Giving in is a matter of the heart, not about winning or losing. Sometimes God allows us to “step back” so that relationships are restored, or so that we do not fall into the sin of anger. But there are also times to stand firm, especially when what is at stake is truth or justice for others, not just personal pride.

Jesus Himself gave the perfect example. He gave in when He was crucified, not retaliating against insults or suffering (1 Peter 2:23), but at other times, He stood firm, such as when He cleansed the Temple (John 2:13-16). This shows that giving in is not weakness, but wisdom to choose the right battles and respond with love.

So, should we always give in? The answer: not always. But we are always called to overcome our ego and act with love, not revenge. Sometimes silence is a form of strength, and sometimes standing firm is also love.

Pray whenever you face conflict: “Lord, what should I do? Give in or stand firm?” And trust that the Holy Spirit will give wisdom in every decision.
