Ask rain from the Lord in the time of the spring rain! The Lord is the one who makes the storm clouds, and he will give them showers of rain, and to everyone the plants in the field.

For what the teraphim speak is evil, and what the diviners see is false, and the dreams they tell are empty, and the comfort they give is vanity. Therefore the people wander like a flock and suffer affliction because there is no shepherd.

“My anger is kindled against the shepherds, and I will punish the leaders of the flock; for the Lord of hosts cares for his flock, the house of Judah, and makes them like his majestic horse in battle.

From them shall come the cornerstone, from them shall come the tent peg, from them shall come the battle bow, from them shall come every ruler together.
5
They shall be like mighty men trampling down the enemy in the mire of the streets; they shall fight, because the Lord is with them, and they shall put to shame the riders on horses.

I will strengthen the house of Judah, and I will save the house of Joseph. I will bring them back, because I have compassion on them; and they shall be as though I had not rejected them, for I am the Lord their God, and I will answer them.

Ephraim shall be like a mighty man, and their heart shall rejoice as if from wine. Their children shall see it and rejoice; their hearts shall exult in the Lord.

I will whistle for them and gather them, for I have redeemed them, and they shall be as many as they were before.

Though I scattered them among the nations, yet in far-off places they shall remember me; they shall live with their children and return.
10
I will bring them back from the land of Egypt, and from Assyria I will gather them; I will bring them into the land of Gilead and into Lebanon, until there is no room for them.

They shall pass through the sea of Egypt, and he will strike the waves in the sea, so that all the depths of the Nile shall dry up. The pride of Assyria shall be brought down, and the scepter of Egypt shall pass away.

I will strengthen them, and they shall glory in the name of the Lord,” declares the Lord.
🌧️ The Lord is the one who gives rain and brings forth plants. But the people instead seek:
- Teraphim (household idols)
- False diviners who give lying dreams and empty comfort
🎯 The Lord calls the people to return to depending on Him, not on false sources.
📌 2. False Shepherds Are Judged, Judah Is Strengthened (verses 3–5)
“My anger burns against the shepherds…”
- The Lord opposes false leaders who lead the people astray
- But from Judah, the Lord will raise up the cornerstone, the peg, and the battle bow
- They will become mighty warriors, like men in battle
🎯 This points to the Messiah (Jesus) who becomes the true leader and strengthens His people in spiritual battle.
📌 3. The Lord Will Redeem and Gather His People (verses 6–8)
“I will strengthen the house of Judah… and save the house of Joseph…”
- The Lord will reunite the tribes of Judah and Ephraim
- He will bring them home from the places of exile
- They will be many in number and become like His people of old
🎯 The Lord revives the identity and calling of His people after they have been scattered.
📌 4. Restoration from Foreign Lands (verses 9–12)
“I will bring them back from the land of Egypt and gather them from Assyria…”
- The Lord will bring His people from Egypt and Assyria → symbols of great exile
- He will make a way, passing through the sea of distress, and strengthen them to live faithfully
🎯 This symbolizes freedom from oppression and the new way the Lord opens, as when they came out of Egypt.

“I am the good Shepherd. The good Shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”
→ Jesus is the answer to the false shepherds in Zechariah 10.
“Repent… so that the Lord may send times of restoration.”
→ True spiritual restoration comes through repentance and God’s grace.
“Christ… has brought near you who once were far away…”
→ A scattered people are now united in Christ — like Judah and Ephraim.
“Wait for the early rain and the latter rain…”
→ Spiritual rain comes from the Lord, not from human effort.
