A divine oracle.
The word of the LORD came against the land of Hadrach, and it rested upon Damascus; for the cities of Aram belong to the LORD, as do all the tribes of Israel;

also Hamath, which borders on it, and Tyre and Sidon, though they are very wise.

Tyre has built herself a fortress wall and has heaped up silver like dust and gold like the mire of the streets.

But behold, the Lord will make her poor and will cast her power into the sea, and the city itself will be consumed by fire.

Ashkelon will see it and fear; Gaza also, and will writhe in great anguish; Ekron too, for her hope has failed. From Gaza the king will perish, and Ashkelon will no longer be inhabited.

A mixed people will dwell in Ashdod, and I will cut off the pride of the Philistines.

I will remove the blood from its mouth and the abominations from between its teeth, and those who remain of them will also belong to our God. They will be regarded like a clan in Judah, and Ekron like the Jebusites.

I will encamp around My house as a guard against those who pass to and fro; no oppressor shall come against them again, for now I Myself have seen it.

Cry out aloud, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king comes to you; he is righteous and victorious. He is humble and riding on a donkey, on a young donkey, the foal of a donkey.
10
He will cut off the chariots from Ephraim and the horses from Jerusalem; the battle bow will be cut off, and he will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River Euphrates to the ends of the earth.

As for you, because of the blood of My covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit.

Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope! Even today I declare: I will restore to you double!

For I have bent Judah for Myself, I have filled the bow with Ephraim, and I will stir up your sons, O Zion, against your sons, O Greece, and I will use you like the sword of a mighty man.

The LORD will appear over them, and His arrow will go forth like lightning. The Lord GOD will blow the trumpet and will advance in the storms of the south.
15
The LORD of hosts will shield them, and they will overcome and trample the sling-stones. They will drink and be in tumult as with wine, and be filled like a bowl, like the corners of the altar.

The LORD their God will save them in that day; like the flock of his people, indeed, they will be like sparkling jewels in a crown, shining in his land.

How good and how beautiful it will be! Young men will thrive on grain, and young women on new wine.
🐪👑🕊️ Summary of Zechariah 9 – Judgment on the Nations & the Coming of the King of Peace
Zechariah 9 is divided into two major themes:
1️⃣ The Lord’s judgment on Israel’s enemies — the nations around them will be destroyed.
2️⃣ The great prophecy about the humble Messiah who brings peace, coming riding on a donkey.
This is one of the most direct prophecies about Jesus Christ, fulfilled when He entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.
📌 1. Judgment on the Surrounding Nations (verses 1–8)
“The eyes of the Lord are on mankind and on all the tribes of Israel…”
The Lord declares judgment on:
- Hadrach, Damascus, Tyre, Sidon, Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron — pagan cities representing Israel’s enemies.
- Tyre, though rich and strong, will be destroyed by the Lord.
But then the Lord says:
“I will encamp around my house as a guard…”
🎯 The Lord is sovereign over the nations. Enemies may attack, but the Lord Himself will protect His people.
📌 2. The King of Peace Comes on a Donkey (verses 9–10)
“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! See, your king comes to you…”
🔹 This is the well-known prophecy about Jesus:
- He comes gentle, riding on a donkey
- He brings peace, not a sword
- His kingdom reaches to the ends of the earth
🎯 This is the opposite of an earthly king: not on a warhorse, but on a donkey of peace. Jesus, the King of Peace, comes in an unexpected way.
📌 3. The New Covenant & Redemption of the People (verses 11–13)
“Because of the blood of your covenant, I will set your people free from the pit…”
- The Lord promises restoration because of the blood of the covenant
- Those who were captive will be released
- The Lord will use Judah and Ephraim like arrow and bow in spiritual warfare
🎯 This points to redemption through the blood of Christ and the rising up of God’s people to become instruments of His victory.
📌 4. The Lord Will Save and Exalt His People (verses 14–17)
“The LORD God will appear… the LORD, their God, will save them…”
- The Lord is described as a heavenly hero
- The people will shine like jewels in a crown
- The Lord’s mercy will pour out abundance, joy, and restoration
🎯 This is a beautiful picture of a people redeemed, glorified, and filled with joy in the presence of their King.
📖 Main Teaching
- The Lord is judge over all nations — no earthly power can rival Him.
- The Messiah comes not as an earthly conqueror, but as a humble bringer of peace.
- The blood of the covenant brings true freedom and restoration for God’s people.
- God’s people are called to be light and glory in the world.
- Salvation from the Lord produces real joy and hope.
✨ Spiritual Meaning (New Covenant)
“See, your King comes to you… he is gentle and riding on a donkey…”
→ Directly quoting Zechariah 9:9 — fulfilled by Jesus when He entered Jerusalem.
“Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”
→ Jesus was hailed as King, but not as an earthly king.
“The God of peace… has brought back from among the dead the great Shepherd…”
→ The blood of the everlasting covenant — as in Zechariah 9:11.
Jesus is also pictured as the King riding on a white horse — at His second coming, bringing justice.
