Betrayal is a deep wound. No one is ready when the person we trust is the very one who hurts us from behind. Even Jesus Himself experienced this when Judas, one of His close disciples, sold Him for only thirty pieces of silver (Matthew 26:14-16). Yet what is remarkable is that Jesus did not respond with hatred. His heart remained pure, without bitterness.
Many people think that the way out of betrayal is to retaliate or keep their distance for life. But the Bible shows a different example. Paul wrote, “See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many” (Hebrews 12:15). A bitter root that grows from a wounded heart not only harms ourselves, but can also affect the people around us.
Imagine if Jesus had held a grudge against Judas. The mission of salvation would not have unfolded as planned. But because His heart remained pure, the work of redemption could be fulfilled. The same was true of Joseph, who was sold by his brothers (Genesis 50:20). Joseph could have chosen bitterness, but instead he said that what people meant for evil, God turned into good.
Bitterness is a burden that makes our steps heavier, while forgiveness is the key to keep walking lightly with God. To forgive does not mean we simply forget the pain, but that we choose not to let that pain rule our lives.
Forgiving also does not mean allowing others to keep hurting us. Sometimes boundaries need to be kept, but the heart must remain free from revenge. Jesus taught in Matthew 5:44, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” This is how we keep our hearts pure, even when the world says otherwise.
When we choose not to become bitter even when betrayed, we are actually handing judgment over to God. Romans 12:19 reminds us, “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, says the Lord.” In other words, we do not need to stain our hearts with revenge, because God will act justly in His time.
A heart that is not bitter is a free heart, a heart ready to be used by God for His glory. The world may say it is impossible, but through the love of Christ, we are enabled to forgive even in the midst of deep pain.
Lord, You know the wounds in my heart caused by betrayal and disappointment. I do not want to live in bitterness. Help me learn to forgive sincerely, like Jesus who did not repay Judas with hatred. Keep my heart pure and worthy to be Your vessel. Amen.
