A Heart Too Busy to Listen

We live in a busy world. Full schedules, nonstop notifications, and daily routines without pause make silence something rare. Many people measure the value of life by how packed their agenda is. But have we ever asked ourselves, is our heart still calm enough to hear God’s voice?

God Speaks in the Silence

In 1 Kings 19:11-12, when Elijah fled and was on the mountain, God was not present in the strong wind, earthquake, or fire, but in a still small voice. This is a gentle admonition for all of us who might expect God to speak in spectacular ways, whereas often His voice comes in the midst of silence, in quiet moments when we stop from our busyness.

However, if our hearts are too busy, how can we possibly hear Him?

Busyness That Obscures Priorities

Jesus rebuked Martha in Luke 10:41-42, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things, but one thing is needed; Mary has chosen the good part, which will not be taken away from her.” Martha did not sin; she was just too busy. But precisely her busyness caused her to miss the real presence of Jesus right before her.

Like Martha, we often care more about completing church tasks, office work, or even spiritual activities without truly listening to God’s voice. We skim the Bible, pray hurriedly, and praise God while thinking about today’s to-do list.

Practicing Silence as a Spiritual Discipline

A healthy spiritual life requires time to stop and be still before God. Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God!” This is not just a command to be quiet, but an invitation to know God more deeply amid a noisy world.

Perhaps we need to ask: when was the last time I truly stopped and listened to God? Not just making requests, but giving space to hear, to realize His presence, and to absorb His truth?

Conclusion

Busyness is not always wrong, but if it makes our hearts deaf to God’s voice, then we are in serious spiritual danger. The discipline to stop, be still, and listen to God’s voice is not passive, but a deep form of obedience. In a world that pushes speed, God invites us to slow down and sit at His feet.

Let us learn from Mary, and begin to set aside time to listen. Because only in silence do we truly know who is speaking to us.
