Spiritual Discipline in the Instant Age

“Fast, practical, instant.” Those three words seem to be the motto of modern human life. Food can be ready in five minutes, shopping only takes one click, and even relationships are sometimes lived out in a flash. But can spirituality also follow an instant pattern? Unfortunately, no.

Spiritual disciplines such as prayer, reading the Bible, fasting, and worship were never designed by God to be fast food. Even Jesus, the Son of God Himself, demonstrated a life full of spiritual discipline. He often withdrew to pray (Mark 1:35), quoted and understood the Scriptures (Luke 4:4-12), and showed unwavering obedience to the Father’s will (John 6:38).

Why are spiritual disciplines so important? Because they are part of the process of shaping our spiritual character. Romans 12:2 says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” That renewal does not happen overnight. Just as a healthy body requires consistent exercise and diet, our soul also needs ongoing training to grow in holiness and knowledge of God.

In an age where everything is fast, waiting on God in prayer can feel boring. Reading the Bible daily feels like a burden, not a necessity. But that is precisely the challenge: are we ready to nurture faith in silence and perseverance?

Hebrews 12:11 reminds us, “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” Spiritual discipline is indeed not always enjoyable at first, but the results are real: spiritual maturity and peace that surpasses understanding.

Do not let the instant culture steal the depth of our relationship with God. Let us return to building a regular spiritual routine. It does not have to be perfect, but consistent. Every moment we spend for God is an eternal investment.
