None of us is instantly “finished.” Every believer is in the process of being shaped, refined, sharpened, and directed by God’s hand. But often, that process feels uncomfortable. There are wounds reopened, plans that do not go as expected, or people we find difficult to face. In moments like these, we have two choices: harden our hearts, or open our hearts to be shaped by God.
In Jeremiah 18:6, God says, “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel!” This is a powerful picture: we are the clay, and God is the One who shapes. But clay can only be formed if it is soft and ready to receive the pressure of the potter’s hand. When our hearts are hard, rigid, or resistant, the shaping process is hindered.
God’s shaping often comes through ordinary things in life: correction from others, financial hardship, demanding work that requires patience, or failures that crush our ego. All of these can become God’s tools to shape our character. In Hebrews 12:11, it says, “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” In other words, not all shaping is pleasant, but all of it is beneficial.
A person whose heart is open to God is someone willing to learn from every situation. He does not defend himself when corrected, does not run away when trained, and does not complain when tested. Instead, he asks, “Lord, what do You want to shape in me through this?” This attitude will speed up spiritual growth and deepen our relationship with God.
Jesus Himself, though the Son of God, was not exempt from the process of shaping. Hebrews 5:8 says, “Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from what He suffered.” If even Jesus was willing to learn through suffering, what about us?
Do not be afraid to be shaped, because the hand that shapes us is a hand full of love. He does not shape carelessly. Every pressure, every friction, every correction has an eternal purpose. Lord, soften my heart so that You can shape me according to Your will. Do not let me harden my heart, but let me always be ready to be taught and trained by Your loving hand. Amen.
