Listen, Not Just Hear

As believers, we know how important it is to hear the Word of God. We read the Bible, attend worship, listen to sermons, and even join spiritual seminars. But how far do we truly listen, not just hear in passing?

In James 1:22 it is written, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” This verse gently but firmly rebukes us: hearing alone is not enough. God’s Word is not meant only to be collected in our minds, but lived out every day.

The world today is full of information. In one day we can absorb dozens of verses through social media, podcasts, or YouTube. But if it only becomes spiritual consumption without being turned into real action, our hearts can become numb. God’s Word is not meant to be seen merely as inspirational quotes, but as the voice of God that we are called to obey.

Jesus gave a parable about two men who built houses, one on the rock and one on the sand. The one who built on the rock is the person who hears and does His words (Matthew 7:24-27). When the storm comes, that house still stands. This shows that the strength of our faith does not lie in how often we hear, but in how sincerely we do it.

Many modern Christians experience spiritual dryness not because they lack teaching, but because they hear too much without doing. We are already full of truth, yet we forget to digest it and live it out. Hearing the Word without obedience will only make our hearts hard, not help us grow.

In 1 Samuel 15:22, the Lord spoke to Saul through the prophet Samuel, “Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice.” But obeying here is not just about the ears, but about a heart that submits. True hearing is always accompanied by obedience.

So, what about us today? Are we only passive listeners, or are we willing to open our hearts and be changed? God is not looking for people who know a lot, but for those who are willing to obey even in small things. Lord, do not let me be only a hearer of Your Word. Shape me into a faithful doer, one who listens with the heart and lives in obedience to Your voice. Amen.
