Envy and the Sin That Hides Behind Spirituality

Envy is slippery. It often disguises itself, unlike anger or lying which are clearly sinful. Envy can appear with a spiritual face: โ€œWhy is his ministry more blessed?โ€ or โ€œIโ€™m faithful too, so why does my life stay the same?โ€

Envy often hides behind seemingly noble motives. But God knows the heart. Cain offered a sacrifice, and so did Abel. But when Cainโ€™s offering was rejected, envy led him to kill. Not because his offering was bad, but because his heart was not right (Genesis 4:5-7).

Envy does not always come from those far from God. Sometimes, even in the midst of ministry and spiritual community, envy can grow strong. We begin to compare: influence, followers, positions, even the intensity of someoneโ€™s prayers.

But James 3:16 says, โ€œFor where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.โ€ This is not a light sin.

Envy makes us forget to be grateful. Our focus shifts from God to others. We start competing instead of serving. We become envious, even though God wants us to walk in different callings, not to imitate one another.

The solution? Return to grace. Remember that God is enough. 1 Corinthians 4:7 says, โ€œWhat do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you did not?โ€

When we realize that everything comes from God, there is no reason for envyโ€”only thanksgiving.
