In the eleventh year, in the third month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:

Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his great multitude:
In your greatness, who can be compared with you?

Behold, I compare you to a cedar in Lebanon, with beautiful branches and a thick canopy of foliage; it was very tall, and its top reached to the clouds.

The waters made it grow great; the deep made it high. It caused its streams to run around the place where it was planted, and sent out channels to all the trees of the field.

Therefore it grew taller than all the trees of the field; its boughs became many, and its branches long, because of the abundance of water when it spread out.
6
All the birds of the sky made their nests in its boughs, and under its branches all the beasts of the field gave birth to their young; and all great nations lived in its shade.

It was beautiful in its greatness and in the length of its branches, for its roots reached to abundant waters.

The cedars in the garden of God could not rival it; the cypress trees could not match its boughs, and the chestnut trees could not compare with its branches. No tree in the garden of God was like it in beauty.

I made it beautiful with the multitude of its branches. In the garden of Eden, in the garden of God, all the trees envied it.

Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Because it grew tall and set its top among the clouds, and its heart was proud of its height,

I gave it into the hand of a mighty one among the nations, that he might deal with it according to its wickedness; I cast it out.
12
Foreigners, the most ruthless of the nations, cut it down and left it. On the mountains and in all the valleys its branches fell, and in all the ravines of the land its boughs were broken. All the peoples of the earth went away from its shade and left it.
13
On its fallen trunk all the birds of the sky settled, and among its branches all the beasts of the field made their home.
14
All this happened so that no trees by the waters should exalt themselves, or set their top among the clouds, and that no trees, all those that drink water in abundance, should stand in their pride; for they have all been given over to death, to the lowest earth, among the children of men who go down to the pit.

Thus says the Lord GOD: On the day it went down to the realm of the dead, I caused the deep waters to mourn for it; I restrained its rivers, and their floodwaters were held back. Because of it I clothed Lebanon in mourning, and all the trees of the field withered away.

At the sound of its fall I made the nations tremble, when I brought it down to the realm of the dead, to meet those who had gone down to the pit. And all the trees of Eden, the choicest and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in the lowest parts of the earth.
17
They also went down with it to the realm of the dead, to those slain by the sword; and those who were its arm, who lived in its shadow among the nations, also went down.
18
To whom then are you to be likened among the trees of Eden in glory and greatness? Yet you shall be brought down to the lowest parts of the earth with the trees of Eden; you shall lie among the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord GOD.
🌳👑⚔️ Summary of Ezekiel 31 – The Fallen Cedar: Egypt’s Destruction Like Assyria’s
Ezekiel 31 presents a parable of a tall and majestic cedar tree — a symbol of the kingdom of Assyria, once exceedingly strong but ultimately brought low because of its pride. The Lord uses Assyria’s downfall as a warning to Egypt, that their pride would bring them to the same fate. The main message: No power can stand against the Lord.

➡️ The Lord allowed foreign nations to cut down that majestic tree, bringing it down to the ground
➡️ All the nations that once took shelter under it became afraid
➡️ The Lord gave this lesson so that no other tree (nation) would exalt itself
🎯 Pride is the fastest road to downfall — even for the greatest kingdom.
📌 3. Assyria Goes Down to the World of the Dead (verses 15–18)
➡️ After falling, Assyria went down to the world of the dead (Sheol)
➡️ The other nations also mourned — they knew they too could experience the same thing
➡️ The Lord declared to Pharaoh:
“Who can be compared with you in glory? You also will go down!”
🎯 There is no exception: death and ruin will come upon the proud, no matter how rich they are.
