Hearing God in the Small Things

“Then the word of the LORD came to him: ‘Go, stand on the mountain before the LORD!’ And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore through the mountains and broke the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind… and after the fire came a sound of a gentle whisper.” (1 Kings 19:11-12)

We often wait for God through great things, spectacular miracles, supernatural events, or prayer answers that are immediately visible. But, what if God is actually speaking through the small things we consider insignificant?

Elijah, a great prophet, once experienced great fear and exhaustion. He sought God in storms, earthquakes, and fire. But God was present in the sound of a gentle whisper. It was a soft, quiet moment, yet full of power. Just like Elijah, we also need to learn to hear God in silence, in everyday life, and in the small things.

Sometimes God’s voice comes through a gentle conviction in our heart when we are about to lie. Sometimes through a child who prays for us innocently. Or maybe through a warm smile from a store cashier, or when we are touched by the lyrics of a worship song in the middle of traffic.

God never stops speaking, but often we are too busy to pay attention.

Learn to slow down. Sit for a moment without your phone. Listen to the voice of your heart filled with God’s word. Notice the sky, falling leaves, or the whisper of the Holy Spirit while reading the Bible. There He is present not only in miracles, but also in the small things that transform the heart.

Don’t wait for a storm to seek God’s voice. Perhaps He is already speaking softly, gently, and lovingly at this very moment.
