In the final moments of His life, Jesus was crucified between two criminals. One of them mocked Him, but the other did something surprising: he admitted his own wrongdoing and asked Jesus for mercy. He said, “Jesus, remember me when You come as King.” (Luke 23:42). Jesus’ answer was beautiful and full of hope, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.” (Luke 23:43).
This short story shows that hope is never closed off to anyone, even in the very last moment of life. The criminal on the cross had no time to prove his repentance through good deeds. He could not come down from the cross and make his life right. All he could do was believe. And that was enough for Jesus to give him eternal salvation.
Often we feel that salvation must be proven through hard work, merit, or spiritual achievements. Yet the cross reminds us that salvation is by grace alone. Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God; not by works, so that no one can boast.”
What is also striking is that the criminal dared to admit his sin. He said, “We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” (Luke 23:41). In other words, he realized that he was unworthy. Yet it was precisely that confession that opened the way for grace to work.
This reflection reminds us that as long as there is breath, there is always a chance to turn back to God. No life is too broken to be saved, and no sin is too great to be forgiven.
Perhaps there are people around us who seem impossible to change, or perhaps we ourselves feel unworthy. But the cross proves that hope is available for everyone. If that criminal could receive the promise of Paradise at the end of his life, how much greater is the opportunity for us who are still given time by God.
Lord Jesus, thank You because You opened the way of salvation even for those considered unworthy. Help me to value Your grace and live in certain hope. Use my life to be a witness that You are a God full of forgiveness. Amen.
