Jesus’ ascension to heaven is often seen as only the “end of the story” after the resurrection. But in truth, that event was the beginning of something far greater for believers. Acts 1:9 records, “After He had said this, He was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid Him from their sight.” The disciples who witnessed it may have been confused, but for us today, Jesus’ ascension carries very deep meaning.
First, Jesus’ ascension shows that the work of redemption is finished. Jesus no longer needed to remain on earth to prove His power, because His cross and resurrection were enough. Hebrews 10:12 says, “But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God.” Sitting at the right hand of God means complete victory and a finished work.
Second, Jesus ascended to heaven so that the Holy Spirit could come. He Himself said in John 16:7, “It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you.” Without His ascension, we would not receive the Holy Spirit who guides us, strengthens us, and gives us power to witness.
Third, Jesus’ ascension gives us the hope that He will return. The angels said to the disciples in Acts 1:11, “This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven.” This means our faith is not focused only on the past (the cross) and the present (the Holy Spirit), but also on a future full of promise: Jesus will come again as King.
In addition, Jesus is now our Intercessor in heaven. Romans 8:34 says, “Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.” This means every prayer we offer reaches the Father through Jesus, who is our assurance.
Jesus’ ascension is not merely a historical event, but a reminder that our faith has a firm foundation and a clear direction. We are not left alone in this world. We have the Holy Spirit who is with us, the hope of His return, and the certainty that our prayers are heard.
Let us live with this confidence: Jesus, who has ascended to heaven, is the same Lord who is with us every day until the end of the age.
Lord Jesus, thank You because You have ascended to heaven and prepared a place for me. Thank You also because You sent the Holy Spirit to guide and strengthen me. Teach me to live with hope in Your return. Amen.
