When we read Paul’s story, it is hard not to be amazed by the transformation of his life. Before he was known as a powerful apostle, Paul was Saul, a persecutor of the church. He was even present when Stephen was stoned, and with great zeal he pursued believers to have them imprisoned (Acts 8:1-3). Imagine, someone so strongly opposed to the Gospel was chosen by God to become the greatest proclaimer of the Gospel in his time.
His encounter with Christ on the road to Damascus changed everything. In an instant, the light from heaven made him physically blind, but it opened his spiritual eyes. He heard Jesus say, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me?” (Acts 9:4). From that moment on, Saul’s life was never the same again. He was baptized, restored, and received the calling to proclaim the Gospel to the nations.
What is extraordinary is that God did not wait for Saul to become good or worthy first. God sovereignly uses even those considered the most unlikely. From someone feared by the church, Paul became the one who built them up and strengthened them. His letters now form the foundation of church teaching around the world.
Paul’s story teaches us two important things. First, no past is too dark for God to use. If God could turn a persecutor into a proclaimer, He can also change our lives, whatever mistakes or wounds we have carried. Second, God’s calling is stronger than human rejection. Many people doubted Paul’s conversion at first, but God’s calling proved that his life had truly been transformed.
Today, perhaps we feel unworthy or burdened by our past. But remember, God’s grace is far greater than our failures. Just like Paul, we too can be used as channels of blessing and witnesses of Christ, not because of who we are, but because of who the God is who calls us.
Lord Jesus, thank You because You are able to change even the darkest life. Use me as You used Paul, so that my life may become a testimony to others. Let Your grace be made visible through my words and actions every day. Amen.
