Many Christians often ask themselves, “Is my life meaningful enough before God if I am just an ordinary person?” Not everyone is called to be a pastor, a great evangelist, or a famous figure. Most of us live simple lives: working, building families, serving modestly in the church, and striving to be faithful in daily life. But, is that pleasing enough in the eyes of God?
1. God Sees the Heart, Not Status
The Bible clearly reminds us that God does not judge people by outward appearance or worldly achievements, but by the heart. When Samuel was about to anoint the king of Israel, he looked at the handsome appearance of David’s older brothers, but God said, “Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7).
David was just a young shepherd who was underestimated, yet he was the one chosen by God. This means that the measure of being pleasing in God’s eyes is not worldly glory, but humility and obedience.
2. God Uses Ordinary People for Extraordinary Things
Throughout biblical history, we see that God often chooses simple people to carry out His great plans.
- Moses was just a shepherd in Midian before being called to lead Israel out of Egypt (Exodus 3:1-10).
- Mary, the mother of Jesus, was just a simple village girl, yet she was used to give birth to the Savior (Luke 1:26-38).
- Most of Jesus’ disciples were fishermen, tax collectors, and other ordinary people. Yet through them, the Gospel spread throughout the world (Acts 4:13).
From this, it is clear that being ordinary does not make us less pleasing. What matters is whether we are willing to be used by God wherever we are.
3. Faithfulness in Small Things Is Greatly Valued
Jesus said, “Whoever is faithful in very little is also faithful in much” (Luke 16:10). Living as an ordinary person gives us many opportunities to demonstrate faithfulness in simple matters: working honestly, loving family, serving sincerely, and maintaining faith in daily life.
To God, the small things we do with a right heart have eternal value. Faithfulness in everyday life is often more precious than great achievements filled with personal ambition.
4. The Value of Our Life Is Not Determined by the World
The world often measures success by wealth, position, or popularity. But Jesus teaches a different perspective: “What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” (Mark 8:36). The value of our life is not measured by how famous or successful we are by the world’s standards, but by our relationship with God.
When a believer lives in love, obedience, and humility, even if they are “ordinary” by human standards, they remain precious and noble in God’s eyes.
Conclusion
Being ordinary does not mean being displeasing before God. What makes us pleasing is a believing heart, a faithful life, and a willingness to be used by Him. God does not seek people with great status, but those who are willing to obey.
