If only You would tear open the heavens and come down,
so that the mountains would quake before You

— as fire kindles dry brush
and as fire makes water boil —
to make Your name known to Your adversaries,
so that the nations would tremble before You,

because You did awesome things that we did not expect,
such as have not been heard since ancient times!

No ear has heard,
and no eye has seen
a god who acts for those who wait for him;
You alone do such things.

You meet those who do what is right
and who remember the way You have shown!
Behold, You were angry, for we have sinned;
against You we have rebelled from of old.

All of us have become like one who is unclean,
and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy cloth;
all of us wither like a leaf,
and our iniquities carry us away like the wind.

There is no one who calls on Your name,
or who rises up to take hold of You;
for You have hidden Your face from us,
and have given us over to the power of our sins.

But now, O LORD, You are our Father!
We are the clay, and You are the one who forms us,
and we are all the work of Your hand.

O LORD, do not be exceedingly angry,
and do not remember iniquity forever!
Behold, look upon us, we are all Your people.

Your holy cities have become a wilderness,
Zion has become a wilderness,
Jerusalem lies desolate.

Our holy and glorious house,
where our fathers praised You,
has been given over to fire,
and all that was most precious to us has become ruins.

In view of all this, O LORD, will You restrain Yourself?
Will You keep silent and afflict us so severely?
The Lord comes for those who wait for Him
There is no other god like Him, who acts for those who hope in Him
🎯 In spiritual dryness, the people do not ask for outward things — but ask for the Lord Himself to be present.
📌 2. Awareness of Sin and Uncleanness (verses 4–7)
“We are all like one who is unclean…”
- A deep picture of how ruined the people’s condition is:
Their righteousness is like a filthy cloth
Their sins are like withered leaves blown away by the wind
- No one calls out or seeks the Lord — even prayer has vanished
🎯 True repentance begins with laying aside self-justification and seeing oneself in the light of the Lord.
📌 3. Confession of the Lord as Father and Potter (verses 8–9)
“You are our Father… we are the clay, You are the potter…”
- Remembering relational identity:
The Lord is Father, and they are His children
The Lord is the potter, and they are clay that can be reshaped
- They ask that the Lord not be angry beyond measure or remember their sin forever
🎯 In brokenness, the people still trust: the Lord can reshape, not cast away.
📌 4. Sorrow over Ruin and Desolation (verses 10–12)
“Jerusalem has become a place of desolation…”
- The people plead by showing the total devastation:
The house of the Lord has become ashes
The holy city has become a wilderness
- A piercing question: “Will You still remain silent, O Lord?”

✨ Spiritual Meaning (New Testament)
When Jesus was baptized, the heavens opened, and the Holy Spirit descended
➡️ Isaiah 64:1 is fulfilled symbolically — God truly tore open the heavens and came down in the person of Jesus.
“We have this treasure in jars of clay…”
➡️ The Lord is the potter; we are fragile vessels, yet He uses us with His power.
“All have sinned… and are justified by grace…”
➡️ As in Isaiah 64, none of our righteousness is sufficient — we can stand only by the grace of Christ.
“Because of His great love… we were made alive together with Christ…”
➡️ From spiritual ruins, God raises up and restores.
