In a world full of self-interest, love is often mixed with certain motives. Some people help in order to receive something back, give so they will look good, or care only when there is something to gain. Yet the true love taught by the Bible is different. True love is love without a hidden agenda.
Jesus said, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44). This command does not make sense to many people, because humanly speaking, love is usually returned with love, not with hatred. But this is where the uniqueness of Christ’s love is seen: a love that does not demand conditions, does not wait for rewards, and does not expect anything in return.
When Jesus ministered on earth, He never did it for personal gain. He fed five thousand people not to become famous, but because He had compassion on the crowd (Mark 6:34-44). He healed the sick not to be praised, but because He loved them. Even on the cross, He prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34). This is pure love that has no hidden agenda.
Sadly, we often find it difficult to follow this kind of love. We can fall into the temptation to love in order to be appreciated, help in order to gain sympathy, or even forgive in order to appear spiritual. Yet love tainted by an agenda is not pure love. Paul reminds us, “Love is patient, love is kind; it does not envy. It does not boast, it is not proud” (1 Corinthians 13:4).
True love is love that gives without calculating gain or loss. That means helping even when no one is watching, forgiving even when there is no word of thanks, and continuing to do good even when others may not return it. It is this kind of love that can transform hearts, both the one being loved and our own.
The challenge for us is to learn to love as Christ loves. It is not easy, but the closer we draw to God, the more our hearts are filled with His love. When Christ’s love overflows in us, we no longer need to seek gain from love, because we know that love itself is the greatest blessing.
Lord Jesus, teach me to love without a hidden agenda. Help me to give sincerely, forgive unconditionally, and care without seeking anything in return. Let Your pure love flow through my life. Amen.
