Our Responsibility or God’s Responsibility?

In living life as believers, we often face an important question: which part is our responsibility, and which should we leave to God? Many Christians get caught in two extremes. One tries to manage everything by themselves, as if God is just a spectator. The other completely gives up without doing anything, saying, “Leave it to God.” Both are equally wrong.

God indeed desires us to have faith, but that faith is not passive. James clearly writes, “Faith without works is dead” (James 2:26). This means God calls us to be actively involved, but in full dependence on Him. We work, pray, make decisions, but still rely on God’s wisdom and power.

The best example of this balance can be seen in the life of Moses. When the Israelites stood before the Red Sea with the Egyptian army chasing behind, Moses panicked and began to pray. But God said to him, “Why do you cry out to Me? Tell the Israelites to move on” (Exodus 14:15). Meaning: it is time to act. Prayer is important, but do not use prayer as an excuse to delay obedience.

Jesus Himself also affirmed the boundary between human duty and God’s duty. In John 15:5 He said, “For apart from Me you can do nothing.” So it is clear, without God we cannot. But in Philippians 2:12-13, Paul gives a balanced picture: “…work out your salvation… for it is God who works in you both to will and to act according to His good purpose.” We work because God also works in us.

In daily life, it is important to ask: is this my part or God’s part? Our task is to obey, step forward, and do our part wholeheartedly. God’s task is to open the way, give the results, and change hearts. When we wisely distinguish between the two, then peace will guide every step.
