Psalms 48

Psalms 48 – Zion, the City of God

1
A Song. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.

(48-2) Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God!

2
(48-3) His holy mountain, beautiful in elevation, is the joy of the whole earth; Mount Zion, on the far north, the city of the great King.

3
(48-4) In her palaces God has made himself known as a stronghold.

4
(48-5) For behold, the kings assembled themselves, they passed by together.

5
(48-6) They saw it, then they were amazed; they were troubled, they hurried away in fear.

6
(48-7) Trembling took hold of them there; pain, as of a woman in labor.

7
(48-8) With the east wind you break the ships of Tarshish.

8
(48-9) As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the LORD of hosts, in the city of our God: God will establish it forever. Selah

9
(48-10) We have thought on your lovingkindness, O God, in the midst of your temple.

10
(48-11) As is your name, O God, so is your praise to the ends of the earth; your right hand is full of righteousness.

11
(48-12) Let Mount Zion rejoice; let the daughters of Judah be glad because of your judgments.

12
(48-13) Walk about Zion, and go around her; count her towers.

13
(48-14) Mark well her bulwarks, consider her palaces, that you may tell it to the generation following.

14
(48-15) For this God is our God forever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end.

🕊️🙏📖 Summary of Psalm 48 – “The Glory of God’s City and His Protection”

Psalm 48 is a song of praise for Jerusalem, the great city of God, written by the sons of Korah. This city is not only the center of Israel’s rule, but also a sign of the Lord’s presence and protection for His people. The psalm emphasizes that God is present among His people, and therefore His city cannot be shaken.

More deeply, this psalm also points prophetically to the heavenly Jerusalem, the eternal dwelling place of believers with God.

📌 1. God Is Exalted in His City (verses 1–3)
➡️ “Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God.”
➡️ His holy mountain is the beauty of all the earth — Mount Zion, the city of the great King.

🎯 Jerusalem is praised not merely for its outward beauty, but because of God’s presence there.

📌 2. Enemies Tremble at the Sight of the Lord’s Protection (verses 4–8)
➡️ Kings came together, but they trembled and fled in fear.
➡️ The psalmist compares their defeat to ships broken by the east wind.

🎯 The Lord Himself becomes an unseen stronghold that strikes fear into the enemies of His people.

📌 3. A Personal Experience of God’s Presence (verses 9–11)
➡️ “We have thought on your lovingkindness, O God, in the midst of your temple.”
➡️ The Lord’s name and righteousness become a source of joy for all the earth.

🎯 Faith is not only teaching — it is real experience with the Lord.

📌 4. A Call to Reflect on the Security of God’s City (verses 12–14)
➡️ The psalmist invites us to walk around Zion, to see her towers and walls.
➡️ So that the next generation may know that “this God is our God forever and ever.”

🎯 We are called to pass on the faith in the Lord who is faithful from generation to generation.
