Psalms 56 – Trust in God in Trouble

1
To the chief musician. Set to the tune: The Dove on Far-off Terebinth Trees. A Miktam of David, when the Philistines took him in Gath.

(56-2) Be gracious to me, O God, for man tramples me down;
all day long the fighter presses me hard.

2
(56-3) My enemies trample me down all day long,
yes, many are they who fight against me in pride.

3
(56-4) When I am afraid,
I will trust in You.

4
(56-5) In God, whose word I praise,
in God I trust; I will not be afraid.
What can flesh do to me?

5
(56-6) All day long they twist my words;
all their thoughts against me are for evil.

6
(56-7) They gather together, they lurk,
they watch my steps,
as men who seek my life.

7
(56-8) Shall they escape by their wickedness?
Bring down the peoples in Your anger, O God!

8
(56-9) You have kept count of my wanderings;
put my tears in Your bottle.
Are they not in Your book?

9
(56-10) Then my enemies will turn back in the day when I call;
this I know, that God is for me.

10
(56-11) In God, whose word I praise,
in the LORD, whose word I praise,

11
(56-12) in God I trust; I will not be afraid.
What can man do to me?

12
(56-13) Your vows are upon me, O God;
I will render thank offerings to You.

13
(56-14) For You have delivered my soul from death,
yes, my feet from stumbling,
that I may walk before God
in the light of life.

🕊️🙏📖 Summary of Psalm 56 – “Trusting in the Midst of Fear”

Psalm 56 was written by David when the Philistines seized him in Gath (1 Samuel 21:10–15). Though he was in a very frightening situation, David wrote a psalm of faith and trust, not panic. He is honest that he is afraid, yet he chooses to trust in the Lord.

This psalm is a prayer of victory in the midst of pressure, and it is fitting for anyone who feels pressed by life’s troubles or surrounded by enemies.

📌 1. A Cry in the Midst of Pursuit (verses 1–2)
➡️ “Be gracious to me, O God, for man tramples me down.”
➡️ The enemy attacks without ceasing.

🎯 In the midst of intimidation, David does not give up — he comes to the Lord.

📌 2. Afraid, Yet Still Trusting (verses 3–4)
➡️ “When I am afraid, I will trust in You.”
➡️ “In God — I trust; I will not be afraid.”

🎯 Faith is not the absence of fear, but the choice to keep trusting when afraid.

📌 3. A Cunning and Cruel Enemy (verses 5–7)
➡️ They twist David’s words and watch every step he takes.
➡️ David leaves them to the judgment of God.

🎯 In the midst of slander and traps, David still does not take revenge himself.

📌 4. The Lord Cares and Remembers Tears (verses 8–9)
➡️ “You have kept count of my wanderings, put my tears in Your bottle…”
➡️ “My enemies will turn back in the day when I call to You.”

🎯 The tears of believers are never wasted — the Lord keeps them.

📌 5. A Vow of Praise and Thanksgiving (verses 10–13)
➡️ David reaffirms his trust and says:
➡️ “I will render thank offerings to You.”
➡️ The Lord has saved him so that he may walk before Him.

🎯 In the midst of threat, David is already praising as though victory has come.

📖 Main Lessons

  • Fear is not a sign of failed faith — what matters is continuing to trust
  • The Lord cares about our tears — He does not ignore our suffering
  • Enemies may be cunning and strong, but God’s power is far greater than all of it
  • Faith turns suffering into praise before the answer arrives
  • We can hold to God’s promise more than to the circumstances around us
