If we read the story of the conquest of the city of Jericho, we might only focus on the collapse of the great wall that blocked the Israelites. However, there is one story that is often overlooked: the story of a woman named Rahab. Rahab was not part of the Israelite nation; in fact, she was known as a prostitute. But because of her faith, she was saved.
When two Israelite spies entered Jericho, Rahab chose to hide them in her house (Joshua 2:1-4). From her actions, we know that Rahab believed in the God of Israel, even though she was not part of the chosen people. She said, โFor we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egyptโฆโ (Joshua 2:10). Rahab heard about the power of God, then believed, and her faith was demonstrated through her actions.
Rahab’s story serves as a reminder that God looks at a believing heart, not a person’s background. Although her past was full of sin, her faith opened the way of salvation for herself and her family.
It is affirmed in Hebrews 11:31, “By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.”
More than that, Rahab’s story also shows that true faith always produces real actions. She did not just say “I believe,” but took a great risk by protecting the spies. Her faith was not merely words, but a courageous way of life.
Rahab also received an extraordinary blessing. From her lineage came Boaz, then Obed, Jesse, and David, and ultimately Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:5-6). A woman with a dark background was used by God in the plan of world salvation. This is proof that nothing is too unclean to be touched by God’s love and power.
We too can learn from Rahab.
Faith is not about how good our past is, but how much we believe in God’s power today. Whatever weaknesses and sins we have committed, God is able to turn them into a story of grace if we dare to believe and step forward in faith.
Lord, thank You for Rahab’s story that reminds me that You see a believing heart, not a past full of failures. Help me to have faith that is real in action, and teach me to live courageously because I trust in Your power. Amen.
