The topic of forgiveness often leaves us wrestling. It is easy to talk about forgiving when the hurt is small, but what if the betrayal comes from someone close, or we have been betrayed again and again? The question arises: should Christians always forgive, even when the heart still feels hurt?
Jesusโ Firm Command
Jesus left no gray area when it comes to forgiveness. When Peter asked how many times he should forgive, whether up to seven times, Jesus answered, “Not seven times, but seventy times seven” (Matthew 18:22). That does not mean we count up to 490 times, but rather that it is a symbol of the unlimited. Forgiveness is the lifestyle of believers, not an occasional choice.
Why Must We Forgive?
There are two major reasons why the Bible emphasizes forgiveness:
- Because we ourselves have been forgiven
Ephesians 4:32 says, “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” Those of us who have received the forgiveness of sins through the cross of Christ have no reason to withhold forgiveness from others. - Because bitterness destroys the soul
Hebrews 12:15 warns about a “root of bitterness” that can defile many. Refusing to forgive not only wounds relationships, but also destroys our own hearts. By forgiving, we are not only freeing others, but also ourselves.
Is Forgiving the Same as Forgetting?
There is often a misunderstanding that forgiving means forgetting as if it never happened. In fact, forgiveness is not the same as erasing memory, but choosing no longer to seek revenge. We can still forgive while also keeping healthy boundaries in relationships. For example, if someone keeps hurting us in the same way, forgiving does not mean allowing ourselves to keep being hurt without wisdom.
Forgiveness Is a Process
Jesus calls us to forgive, but that does not mean every wound can heal in a single night. There is a process, there are tears, there is struggle. What matters is that our hearts are willing to obey the Word and surrender the pain to God. The Holy Spirit is the One who gives strength to do what is impossible for human beings.
Colossians 3:13 emphasizes, “Bear with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.” So forgiveness is a clear sign of Christโs love at work in us.
What Is the Fruit of Forgiveness?
When we forgive, the fruit is extraordinary:
- The heart is restored from the burden of bitterness.
- Relationships are restored, though sometimes it takes time.
- Our prayers are not hindered, because Jesus said that if we do not forgive, the Father will not forgive our trespasses either (Mark 11:25).
- The witness of the Gospel is real, because the world can see a love that goes beyond human logic.
Conclusion:
Should Christians always forgive? The answer is yes. Forgiveness is a calling, not an option. Though it is hard, we can forgive because Christ has already forgiven us first. Forgiving does not mean forgetting or allowing evil to repeat itself, but releasing the demand for revenge and entrusting justice to God. In the end, forgiveness not only frees others, but also frees us to live in the love of Christ.
