The church should be the living body of Christ, a place where believers grow in the Word and in love. Yet not every church truly walks in the way of Christ. Some churches slowly move away from Christ even while still using His name. Jesus Himself warned that in the last days many deceptions would arise (Matthew 24:11).
Distinguishing between a church that is truly centered on Christ and one that only uses His name is not easy. That is why the Bible gives clear signs so that we may stay alert.
1. Replacing Christ with Human Figures
Jesus is the Head of the Church (Colossians 1:18). However, a church that has drifted often elevates a leader so highly that he is feared more than God. When the congregation is directed to obey people more than Christ, that is a sign it has already gone astray.
2. Blurring the Work of the Cross
The true gospel always emphasizes that salvation comes only through the death and resurrection of Christ (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). If a church talks more about motivation, success, or personal experience than about Christ’s work on the cross, then the center of the gospel has been shifted.
3. Neglecting Pure Love
Jesus said, “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35). A church that has drifted from Christ tends to be more focused on building systems, power, or facilities, while forgetting genuine love for others.
4. Putting the World Above the Kingdom of God
When worship feels more like entertainment than adoration, when luxury is emphasized more than humility, that is when we need to be alert. James 4:4 says, “Friendship with the world is enmity with God.” A true church should lead the congregation to hunger more for eternity, not merely for temporary comfort.
5. Rejecting the Rebuke of the Word
The Word of God is like a double-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12), which rebukes and corrects. However, a church that has drifted from Christ will adjust the Word to suit human tastes, even refusing to speak about sin or repentance in order to preserve the congregation’s comfort. As a result, truth is sacrificed for popularity.
6. Not Living in Christ’s Commission
Jesus gave the Great Commission to preach the gospel to the whole world (Matthew 28:19-20). A church that has drifted, however, forgets this calling and becomes more focused on building its own name than on making disciples of Christ.
Conclusion:
A church that has drifted from Christ is usually marked by the loss of the centrality of the cross, the exaltation of man, the prioritizing of the world, the loss of love, the rejection of the Word’s rebuke, and the forgetting of Jesus’ mission. That is why Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 11:3 not to be led away from sincere devotion to Christ.
The task of every believer is to follow Christ, not merely the name of a church. A healthy church will always bring the congregation closer to Jesus, not farther away from Him.
