Since the time of the apostles, the church has faced many teachings that stray from the truth of Christ. Paul once wrote firmly to the church in Galatia that some were preaching another gospel, even though there is only one true Gospel (Galatians 1:6-7). This means that even within Christianity itself, teachings can arise that sound spiritual, but in fact draw people away from Christ.
This topic is important because many Christians can become trapped without realizing it. So, let us look at several specific signs of distorted teaching in the light of the Bible.
1. Christ Is No Longer the Center
The true Gospel always places Jesus at the center of faith. John wrote, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). However, distorted teaching often shifts Christ from the center and replaces Him with a leader’s figure, personal experiences, or even church programs. If the congregation is led to admire people more than Christ, then the direction of faith is already wrong.
2. Salvation Is Turned into Human Effort
Ephesians 2:8-9 clearly says that salvation is by grace, not by works. But distorted teaching will add other requirements beyond faith in Christ, such as certain traditions, special rituals, or obligations that burden the congregation. This makes people think that salvation can be achieved by their own effort, even though the Bible emphasizes that it comes only through God’s grace.
3. The Truth of the Word Is Compromised
God’s Word often rebukes and corrects, because it is indeed a double-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12). Yet distorted teaching tends to ignore the harder parts of Scripture about sin, judgment, and repentance. The sermon contains only things that please the ear, so that everyone feels comfortable. Paul already warned that a time would come when people would seek teachers who only say what their itching ears want to hear (2 Timothy 4:3).
4. Chasing the World More Than Eternity
Jesus reminded us, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth… but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven” (Matthew 6:19-20). If teaching places more emphasis on wealth, success, and popularity as signs of God’s blessing, then the focus of faith is directed toward the temporary world, not toward God’s eternal kingdom. God does bless, but the Gospel is not a promise of a luxurious life.
5. Christ’s Love Is Replaced by Power
The mark of a true church is love (John 13:35). Yet distorted teaching often builds a hierarchical system that pressures the congregation. Leaders are more busy demanding honor than setting an example of humility. Love is replaced by power, and the congregation feels more fear than edification.
6. The Great Commission Is No Longer Carried Out
Jesus sent His disciples to go to all nations and preach the Gospel (Matthew 28:19-20). But there are churches or teachings that are more focused on building facilities, expanding their own name, or keeping the group exclusive. If Christ’s mission is neglected, then the direction of that church no longer aligns with God’s will.
7. The Holy Spirit Is Not Properly Known
Distorted teaching can reject the role of the Holy Spirit altogether, or on the other hand invoke the Holy Spirit for things that contradict the Bible. John 16:13 affirms that the Holy Spirit leads into all truth, not into anything that strays from the Word. If spiritual claims do not align with Scripture, we must be careful.

From these signs we learn that distorted teaching is usually marked by Christ being pushed from the center, salvation being obscured, the Word being twisted, the world being exalted, love being lost, mission being forgotten, and the Holy Spirit being misunderstood.
Therefore, every believer is called to remain steadfast in the truth of the Word. Paul said, “Test everything; hold fast what is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21). Do not be easily captivated by outward appearances, but make sure that every teaching truly brings us closer to Christ.
