Jesus already warned in Mark 8:36: โWhat good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?โ This verse reminds us that no matter how great worldly achievements are, they mean nothing if they cause us to drift away from God. The world can offer temporary pleasures, but only God can give eternal life.
The Bible also says in Romans 12:2: โDo not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what Godโs will isโhis good, pleasing and perfect will.โ The life of a believer should not be controlled by worldly thinking, but must be guided by the word of God.
Many people lose their way because they are more busy pursuing human recognition than seeking God’s approval.
When the heart is filled only with the desire to appear great in the eyes of others, we are exchanging eternal direction for something fleeting. Yet, God calls us not to be conformed to the world, but to be the light and salt in the midst of the world (Matthew 5:13-14).
Maintaining spiritual direction means having the courage to say โnoโ to things that lead us astray, even if they seem advantageous. It means choosing to remain faithful in prayer, meditating on the Word, and walking in truth, even when the world laughs or belittles. Faithfulness to Christ is more valuable than all the praise of the world.
Remember, the compass of a believer’s life is Christ Himself. As long as we keep our eyes on Him, our direction will be preserved. Hebrews 12:2 affirms, โLet us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.โ
So, do not let the world divert your gaze. It is better to lose the world than to lose the direction toward eternal life.
Lord Jesus, please help me not to lose my way in following You.
Teach me not to be tempted by the temporary pleasures of the world, but to remain faithful in looking to You as the purpose of my life. Guide my steps so that I always walk in Your way. Amen.
