If we judge life by the length of time on earth, then Abel might seem like a “failure.” His life was short, even ending tragically because he was killed by his brother, Cain.
But the Bible records that Abel’s life was pleasing to the Lord, far more meaningful than a long life without faithfulness.
In Genesis 4:4 it is written, โAbel also brought an offeringโfat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock,
then the Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering. The difference is simple: Abel gave his best, while Cain gave carelessly.
Abel’s sincerity in giving was a sign of his love and faith in God.
The Bible then affirms in Hebrews 11:4: “By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did.”
By this he received testimony that he was righteous, because God was pleased with his offering. Although his life was short, Abel’s faith makes his voice still speak today.
A life that pleases God is not always measured by the length of years, but by the quality of faith. There are people who live long but are far from God, and there are those whose lives are short but leave a lasting legacy of faith. Abel is an example that God cares more about the content of the heart than the number of years lived.
Abel’s story also reminds us that faithfulness to God can bring rejection from the world. However, it is better to live a short life in truth than a long life in deviation. The world may not appreciate it, but God sees and is pleased.
As believers, we are called not only to live long, but to live meaningfully before God. Every day is an opportunity to give our best, not just what is sufficient.
Every choice can become a fragrant offering before Him.
So, let us learn from Abel: even a short life can be significant if lived with faith and faithfulness. What matters is not how long we live, but whether our life is pleasing to God.
Lord, teach me to live not merely pursuing a long life, but a life that is pleasing in Your sight. Help me so that every offering, decision, and action comes from pure faith. Let my life be a testimony that delights Your heart. Amen.
