What Does God See When He Looks at Your Heart?

Man looks at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart. This sentence is not just a spiritual proverb, but the word of God clearly written in 1 Samuel 16:7. When Samuel was about to anoint a king among the sons of Jesse, he was almost deceived by the handsome appearance of Eliab. But God affirmed: it is not the outward appearance that He seeks, but a heart that is pleasing to Him.

The question is: if God looks at your heart right now, what does He see? Does He see a clean and sincere heart, or a heart full of bitterness, envy, or hypocrisy? We often get busy fixing our outward image, beautifying our reputation, even trying to appear spiritual before others, while God is not interested in that appearance.

In Proverbs 4:23, we are reminded: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” The heart is the control center of our life. From it flows our attitudes, words, and the choices we make. If our heart is contaminated, our life will also be led astray.

Jesus also taught the same thing. In Matthew 15:18-19, He said that what comes out of the mouth originates from the heart, and that is what defiles a person. This means sin does not start from actions, but from the condition of the heart. Therefore, guarding the heart is a very serious spiritual act.

God seeks a heart that is willing to be shaped, not a heart that feels it is good enough. He does not demand perfection, but honesty. David once fell into great sin, yet he was called a man after God’s own heart because of his humility when he repented (Psalm 51:10-12).

Today, let us pause from our busy routines and ask in silence: “Lord, what do You see when You look at my heart?” If there is anything that needs to be cleansed, ask the Holy Spirit to correct and restore. Because when our heart is right before God, then our life will please Him, even if it may not be perfect in the eyes of man.
