The year is almost over. Maybe you are setting resolutions, writing new plans, or simply reflecting on your life’s journey. But before we get too busy thinking about what we will achieve, it is good to ask ourselves: “What do I need to leave behind this year?”
The Bible says, “Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (Hebrews 12:1). This verse reminds us that to move forward, we need to let go of the burdens that hold us back.
Those burdens can be disappointment, betrayal, failure, hidden sins, or even the expectations of others that we keep carrying. There are things we have held tightly throughout this year because we thought they were important, but in fact, they make our hearts weary and our steps slow.
Maybe you need to leave behind the guilt you haven’t yet released. Or you need to stop carrying bitterness toward someone who once hurt you. Or perhaps, you need to say goodbye to the fear that makes you hesitate to move forward.
Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). God does not force, but waits for us to be willing to surrender our burdens to Him. As the year ends, this is the right time to come to Him and say, “Lord, I am tired of carrying this. I want to leave it and give it all to You.”
Sometimes we are afraid to let go because we are used to holding on. But believe me, what God has prepared ahead is far better than what you are holding now. Letting go does not mean losing, but making room for new things from God.
This year does not have to end perfectly. But we can close it with a lighter heart. Do not carry old wounds into a new season. Do not carry unconfessed sins into a fresh year.
Ask yourself today: What do I need to leave behind? And let God guide you to lighter and more hopeful steps.
