When Jesus was crossing the lake with His disciples, suddenly a very fierce storm arose. The boat was almost sinking, while Jesus was actually sleeping at the stern. The disciples panicked, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” (Mark 4:38). Then Jesus woke up, rebuked the wind, and said to the lake, “Quiet! Be still!” Immediately the wind died down and the lake became calm (Mark 4:39). This event is not only about Jesus’ power over nature but also about His power to calm our hearts in the midst of life’s storms.
Often we feel like those disciples. Life suddenly is hit by storms: financial problems, illness, family conflicts, or work pressures. We try to control the situation, but the more we struggle, the more it feels like our life’s boat is about to capsize. At that moment we ask, “Lord, do You care?” That question is human, but this story shows that Jesus never sleeps in the sense that He doesn’t care; rather, He knows that His power is greater than any storm.
Jesus not only silenced the storm physically, He also wanted to grow the disciples’ faith. After the storm subsided, He asked, “Why are you so afraid?
“Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” (Mark 4:40). This question is also directed to us today. Are we more focused on the size of the storm or on the greatness of God’s power?
When God silences the storm, He is showing that He is the ruler over all things, both seen and unseen. No storm is too great for Him. Even the most frightening storm submits to His voice. That is why Philippians 4:7 says, “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Today, perhaps our storm has not yet calmed. But when we surrender our fears to God, He is able to give us peace before the storm ends. True faith is not only believing when the lake is calm, but continuing to believe when the storm is still raging.
Lord Jesus, thank You because You have power over every storm in our lives. Teach us not to be afraid, but to trust that You are always present. Calm our hearts with Your peace, and enable us to see that Your power is greater than all our problems. Amen.
