Have you ever felt tired even though you haven’t just exercised, haven’t lacked sleep, and are not sick? This tiredness without a clear reason turns out to be not just about the physical. There are many hidden things we often ignore, from the scientific side to the spiritual side.
Scientifically, the body stores emotions and stress. When we face mental pressure even just in our thoughts, the brain activates the stress system, just like when the body faces real danger. Cortisol hormone increases, heart rate rises, and muscles tense. If this continues constantly, our body becomes exhausted because it is always on alert, even without physical movement. So, tiredness can come from an overactive mind.
In a neurological study, it was found that brain activity from overthinking can drain energy almost as much as light physical activity. Imagine our brain like a laptop battery: even if you don’t open many applications, if one process runs endlessly in the background, the battery will quickly drain. The same goes for our body.
From a spiritual perspective, tiredness can be an alarm from God. When we are far from His presence, our soul is empty and tries to find other fillers that do not satisfy. Ecclesiastes 2:23 says, โFor all his days are full of sorrow, and his work is a vexation; even in the night his heart does not rest. This is also vanity.โ This verse describes inner exhaustion that is not resolved by sleep or vacation.
Jesus also felt tired in a human way, yet He knew where to return. Mark 1:35 records, โVery early in the morning, while it was still dark, He got up, left the house, and went off to a solitary place, where He prayed.โ Prayer is not merely a spiritual obligation but becomes a place of restoration and inner silence.
Sometimes tiredness without cause can be an invitation to pause for a moment, reassess priorities, and return to seek peace in God’s presence. Psalm 62:2 affirms, โTruly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him.โ
Perhaps when our body and mind feel heavy without a clear reason, it is God’s gentle whisper: โReturn to Me. Here is the peace you have been seeking.โ
