Why Does God Shape Us Through Difficult People?

Everyone has met a difficult person at some point: it may be a stubborn coworker, a family member with high demands, or even a fellow believer whose character tests our patience. Interestingly, it is often precisely these kinds of people whom God uses to shape our character. Proverbs 27:17 says, โ€œAs iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.โ€

God could shape us through more โ€œcomfortableโ€ means, through the teaching of the Word, prayer, or the example of good people. However, the deepest shaping usually happens through friction. Just as iron cannot be sharpened with soft cloth, so our faith and character will not be formed if they are never tested.

Facing difficult people teaches us things we may not learn through theory alone. We learn patience when dealing with emotional people. We learn humility when dealing with proud people. We learn to forgive when we are betrayed. In other words, difficult people are โ€œmirrorsโ€ that God allows to be present so we can see which parts of our hearts still need to be shaped.

Jesus Himself once faced many difficult people. The scribes who were always looking for faults, the disciples who were slow to understand, and even Judas who betrayed Him. Yet, Jesus did not avoid them simply because they were difficult. Instead, He showed love, patience, and obedience to the Father through His response.

The good news is that difficult people do not always have to make us bitter. If we are willing to see them from a spiritual perspective, they can become โ€œsharpening toolsโ€ that help us become more like Christ. God never places us wrongly. It may be that their presence is part of His plan to enlarge our hearts and strengthen our faith.

Today, if you are struggling with someone who feels โ€œdraining,โ€ do not rush to pray that person out of your life. Instead, ask: Lord, what are You teaching me through this situation?

Character is not formed in the comfort zone, but in the midst of friction. And often, the person we find most disturbing is precisely the tool God uses to bring us closer to the image of Christ.

Father, I confess that I often become upset and angry when dealing with difficult people. But today I learn that You can use them to shape me. Teach me to be patient, humble, and forgiving. Do not let me miss a precious lesson simply because I resist Your shaping. Amen.
