In daily life, we are often surrounded by so many voices: other people’s opinions, the desires of our hearts, fear, even self-doubt. Yet there is one gentle voice that is often overlooked: the whisper of the Holy Spirit. John 16:13 says, “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth.”
The Holy Spirit does not always speak in spectacular ways. He rarely “shouts.” Instead, the Holy Spirit often speaks through gentle promptings, a peace or uneasiness that cannot be explained, or a reminder of the Word that comes at just the right time. This is why many Christians miss His voice, because they are more focused on the noise of the world.
Ignoring the whisper of the Holy Spirit means choosing to walk in our own strength. As a result, we may make decisions that seem logical, but actually draw us away from God’s will. On the other hand, hearing and obeying the Holy Spirit means opening the way for God’s perfect guidance in our lives.
A simple example: there are times when we feel “not at peace” when we are about to do something. That may be more than just a feeling; it could be the whisper of the Holy Spirit reminding us. Or, on the contrary, we may feel peace when making a decision that from the outside seems risky, but in fact that is the path the Lord wants us to take.
Learning to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit requires closeness. Just as we can recognize the voice of a close friend in a crowd, so too will we more easily recognize the voice of the Holy Spirit when we are accustomed to walking closely with Him through prayer, the Word, and obedience.
Small acts of obedience open the way for greater obedience. If we faithfully follow the whisper of the Holy Spirit in simple matters, such as helping someone, forgiving, or holding back words that would hurt, we are training our spiritual ears to hear in greater matters.
Do not ignore the whisper of the Holy Spirit just because it sounds simple or unreasonable. Often, that is exactly where we find God’s wondrous plan.
Today, let us ask ourselves: have I been listening to the Holy Spirit, or do I more often follow my own logic and desires?
Holy Spirit, teach me to be sensitive to hear Your voice. Do not let the noise of the world cause me to ignore Your whisper. Guide me, even in simple matters, so that I may grow accustomed to living in obedience to You. I believe Your way is always better than the way I think. Amen.
