Can Fear Draw Us Closer to God?

We often consider fear as something to be avoided. Fear of failure, fear of loss, fear of pain, or fear of the futureโ€”all of these feel weakening. But did you know that fear can actually be a way to draw closer to God? Strange, isn’t it? But that is precisely where the miracle lies.

Fear Is Not Always Bad

The Bible does not deny that humans can be afraid. Even great figures like David, Moses, Elijah, and Paul experienced fear. But instead of rejecting that feeling, they brought their fears to God.

In Psalm 56:4, David writes:

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.”

This means, fear actually encouraged David to lean more deeply on God.

Fear Makes Us Realize We Need God

When we feel strong and everything seems under control, we often forget to rely on God. But when the storm comes, and we realize we cannot depend on our own strength, fear can become a tool to humble ourselves and seek God.

Isaiah 41:10 says:

“Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.”

God does not say, “You will never be afraid,” but rather “When you are afraid, I am there.”

There Is a Difference Between Destructive Fear and Guiding Fear

Fear can make us drift away from God if we let it control us. But fear can also be a spiritual compass that directs us back to Him. For example:

  • Fear of failure can lead us to seek God’s wisdom in every decision.
  • Fear of loss can open our eyes to the fact that only God never changes.
  • Fear of the future can make us entrust our lives completely into His hands.

Healthy Fear: The Fear of the Lord

Proverbs 9:10 says:

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.”

The fear of the Lord does not mean being afraid that He will punish us at any moment, but to respect and realize that He is holy, great, and sovereign. This kind of fear protects us from pride and leads us to live with spiritual awareness.

Conclusion: Fear Can Be the Starting Point of Closeness

God does not condemn us for fear. In fact, in that fear, He is often closest. He is present not to mock our weaknesses, but to strengthen them. So rather than running away from fear, run to God.

Let fear be a bridge, not a wall. Because it is precisely in the midst of fear that we can find who we can truly rely on, and the only answer is God Himself.
