Criticism is something that is hard to avoid, especially if we live actively in society or in ministry. Some criticism is constructive, but some is sharp and painful. The question is, how can we remain steadfast without losing heart when facing it?
The Bible never promises that we will live free from hurtful words. Even Jesus was often criticized and misunderstood. John 15:20 records His words, “If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you.” This means that criticism is often part of following Christ.
The first step to not losing heart is understanding who is the source of our self-worth. If we measure ourselves only by other people’s opinions, we will be shaken every time a bad comment comes. But when we remember that we are God’s beloved creation (Psalm 139:14), we will have a strong foundation to keep standing.
The second step is to separate the content of the criticism from the tone of the criticism. Sometimes, even if it is delivered in an unpleasant way, there is truth we can take in order to grow. Proverbs 27:6 says, “Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.” Learning to discern helps us not to react impulsively and to remain wise.
The third step is to surrender our hearts to God whenever the criticism hurts. Philippians 4:7 promises, “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” In this way, we do not respond with hatred, but continue walking in love.
Jesus Himself is our example in facing criticism. He was not busy proving Himself to everyone, but remained faithful in doing the Father’s will. If we focus on the mission God has given us, criticism will not stop our steps.
Lord, teach me to see criticism with a wise heart. Help me not to lose heart, but to remain humble and willing to learn. Guard my heart so it remains full of love, even toward those who wound with their words.
