We are often taught about the importance of forgiving others, and that is true. But there is one forgiveness we often forget: forgiving ourselves. Many Christians say, “I know God has forgiven me, but I still cannot forgive myself.” Inner wounds, regret, and guilt can keep haunting us, even after repentance and receiving God’s forgiveness.
Yet let us reflect on this: if God, who is holy and perfect, has already forgiven us, then who are we to refuse to forgive ourselves? In 1 John 1:9 it says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” That is a promise, not a possibility. It means, God’s forgiveness is absolute for those who come with a broken and repentant heart.
The problem is that many of us live with the burden of the past. We punish ourselves, replay our mistakes in our minds, and feel unworthy to be used by God. Yet, grace is not only for saving, but also for restoring. God does not merely forgive; He also restores our identity and our future.
Psalm 103:12 says, “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.” If God has cast our sins that far away, why do we keep holding them in our hearts? Perhaps we are afraid of falling again. But God does not call us to live in fear and accusation, but in love and freedom. Romans 8:1 declares, “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Forgiving ourselves does not mean ignoring our mistakes, but receiving the truth that God is greater than our sin. It is about making peace with the past and trusting the work of Christ, who has cleansed us completely. If we keep rejecting ourselves, how can we move forward in His plan?
Maybe you have failed, hurt someone, or made the wrong decision. But God says, “Behold, I am making all things new” (Revelation 21:5). That includes you. Not half new, but completely.
Lord, I know that You have forgiven me. Now, please help me release the guilt that has long held me captive. Teach me to see myself as You see me—loved, redeemed, and restored. I want to walk in the freedom of Your grace. Amen.
