Refusing to Be Controlled by Fear

Fear is a very human experience. We have all experienced it—fear of failure, fear of rejection, fear of losing loved ones, fear of an uncertain future. But the problem is not the fear itself, rather when we choose to be controlled by it.

In 2 Timothy 1:7, the Apostle Paul writes, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” This means that fear does not come from God. When fear begins to take over our minds and hearts, it is not because God wills it. On the contrary, God gives us a spirit of strength, a spirit that moves us to step forward even when we tremble.

Just look at the story of David and Goliath in 1 Samuel 17. All the Israelites trembled facing that giant. But David, a young shepherd boy, dared to step forward not because he was without fear, but because he refused to let fear control him. He said firmly, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” (1 Samuel 17:37)

True faith is not about never being afraid, but about choosing to trust when fear comes. When fear attacks, the question is not “how do I stop being afraid?” but “who do I trust that is greater than my fear?”

Jesus Himself said in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you… Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” That peace is not the result of a calm situation, but from the presence of God who never leaves us.

Today, whatever you fear, surrender it to God. Say, “I am afraid, Lord, but I trust You.” Let faith be your answer to fear. Because a life led by faith will always be stronger than a life controlled by fear.
