There is an extraordinary event recorded in the Bible when Peter walked on water towards Jesus. This event is not just a spectacular story, but a valuable lesson about faith. Walking on water is a metaphor for daring to step out of the comfort zone, trusting Jesus more than the situation we see.
In Matthew 14:28-29, Peter said, โLord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.โ Jesus said, โCome!โ So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water to go to Jesus. As long as his eyes were fixed on Jesus, he was able to do the impossible. But when he saw the strong wind, he began to sink.
This story reminds us that faith is not just believing from afar, but having the courage to step forward. Peter would never have known he could walk on water if he had stayed sitting in the boat. The boat represents human versions of safety, while the water symbolizes uncertainty full of risks.
We often prefer our boats: comfort, security, or plans that we control.
However, Jesus calls us to step onto the water, which is something impossible if we rely only on our own strength. And just like Peter, we can walk as long as our gaze remains fixed on Christ.
Hebrews 12:2 says, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.” Our focus greatly determines whether we will walk by faith or sink into doubt.
Perhaps right now God is calling you out of your comfortable “boat”: to take a step of faith in your work, ministry, or a major life decision. Do not be afraid to step onto the water, because Jesus is already there waiting for you. Even if your faith wavers, His hand is ready to support you, just as He immediately reached out His hand to Peter (Matthew 14:31).
So, do not let fear hold you back. It is better to walk on water with Jesus than to sit comfortably in the boat without Him.
Lord Jesus, teach me to be brave to step out of my comfort zone and walk by faith. Help me to keep my eyes always fixed on You, not on the storms around me.
When I begin to waver, hold my hand and strengthen me. Amen.
