Spiritual Discipline Is Not Always Comfortable

Many people think that growing spiritually always feels peaceful and pleasant. In reality, spiritual discipline often requires sacrifice and perseverance that can push us out of our comfort zone. Just like the muscles of the body need to be trained with resistance in order to grow strong, our faith also needs to be tested and shaped through consistent spiritual habits, even when they feel heavy.

Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 9:27, “But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.” This verse shows that spiritual training requires self-control and strong determination. Reading the Bible every day, praying faithfully, fasting, or serving are not activities that always feel easy. There are days when we would rather sleep, relax, or follow the desires of our hearts, but spiritual discipline teaches us to choose obedience even when it is uncomfortable.

The Lord often uses discomfort to shape our character. When we pray even though our hearts feel dry, or keep praising even when circumstances are difficult, we are learning to rely on faith, not feelings. Hebrews 12:11 says, “Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” This means that the results of spiritual discipline will only become visible when we remain faithful in practicing it.

We need to remember that discipline is not a burden, but a form of Godโ€™s love to shape us into the likeness of Christ. Just as a coach pushes an athlete beyond their limits because he knows the potential they have, the Lord also shapes us through spiritual training so that our faith may mature.

Perhaps right now you are struggling to be consistent in reading the Word, praying, or fellowshipping. Laziness, busyness, or even boredom can become obstacles. Yet believe this: every small step in spiritual discipline is an eternal investment.

Lord, thank You because You love me by shaping my character through spiritual discipline, even though it often feels heavy. Help me to remain faithful in prayer, in meditating on Your Word, and in obeying You, even when it is sometimes uncomfortable. Shape me into a spiritually mature person who lives to glorify Your name.
