The Holy Spirit, the Often Forgotten Helper

Many Christians easily mention the Father and Jesus in prayers and faith conversations, but forget that there is a Third Person in the Trinity who is present every day: the Holy Spirit. Yet, without the Holy Spirit, we cannot understand the word, strengthen ourselves in temptation, or grow in faith.

Jesus Himself said that He must go so that the Helper can come to us (John 16:7). The term “Helper” here comes from the Greek word Parakletos, which means not only helper but also comforter, defender, and counselor. This shows that the role of the Holy Spirit is very active and personal in the life of every believer.

However, often we try to live the Christian life by our own strength. We forget to ask for His guidance, or even fail to realize His presence. We read the Bible like reading an ordinary book, pray as a routine, and serve relying on human logic without realizing that all of that is empty without the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is not merely “spiritual energy” or “a feeling of peace.” He is God Himself who dwells within us. In John 14:26, Jesus explains that the Holy Spirit will teach everything and remind us of all that He has said. This means that whenever we long for the word to be alive, we need to involve the Holy Spirit.

The sign of the Holy Spirit’s presence is not always a spectacular manifestation, but can be seen in the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23): love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, and so on. All of these can only grow if we are sensitive and open space for Him to work.

Today, let us admit that we often forget this faithful Helper. Let us learn to involve the Holy Spirit not only in great ministries but also in small decisions, in personal struggles, even in the quietest and simplest prayers.
