Serving with the Heart: More Than Just Activities

Often, service in Christianity is seen as a checklist: playing music, preaching, leading small groups, or participating in church activities. But is that really the essence of serving? If service is only understood as an activity, we can do it without heart, even without God.

Jesus never separated service from love. In Mark 10:45, He said that the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many. True service always springs from sacrifice and sincere love, not from achievement or self-existence.

Service is not about being in the spotlight, but about a heart willing to obey even in unseen matters. Sweeping the church when no one is watching, listening to the burdens of someone who is down, or quietly praying for someoneโ€”all these are noble forms of service in God’s eyes.

The problem is, we easily fall into spiritual pride. We feel “more spiritual” when busy serving, yet our hearts are far from God. We can be active in church but spiritually dry. This is why it is important to realize that serving is not the ultimate goal, but a response of love to Christ.

Romans 12:11 says, โ€œNever be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.โ€ Not just diligence, but an inner passion born from an intimate relationship with God. If that relationship is cold, service can become a bland routine.

Let us examine our heartโ€™s motivation today. Are we serving to be seen by others, or because we love God? Are we still involving Him in our service, or have we gone on our own? Because to God, a serving heart is more important than busy hands.
