After Jesus died on the cross, a question often arises and can be confusing: what actually happened during the three days before His resurrection? Did Jesus truly descend to the realm of the dead? If so, what did He do there?
The Bible does not explain the chronology in detail, but there are several important clues that help us understand this event carefully and biblically.
Jesus Truly Died, Not Merely Fainted
First, it is important to affirm that Jesus truly died. In Luke 23:46, Jesus said, “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit,” and then He breathed His last.
John 19:33-34 also records that Jesus was already dead when the soldiers examined Him.
This is important, because the death of Jesus is the central part of the work of redemption.
Jesus was not merely “unconscious,” but truly experienced death.
Jesus Descended to the “Realm of the Dead”
In Acts 2:27 (quoting Psalm 16), Peter said that God would not let His soul remain in the realm of the dead.
The term “realm of the dead” (Hades) in the biblical context often refers to the place of the dead, not eternal hell as it is often imagined.
The Apostles’ Creed also says that Jesus “descended into the realm of the dead.”
This shows that Jesus truly entered the condition of death like human beings in general.
Proclaiming Victory, Not Being Tormented
1 Peter 3:18-19 is one of the most frequently discussed passages. This verse says that Jesus “went and preached the gospel to the spirits in prison.”
Interpretations of this verse differ, but many theologians understand that this does not mean Jesus went to suffer or be tormented in the realm of the dead.
Rather, it is understood as:
- a declaration of victory over sin and death
- a proclamation that the work of redemption was finished
Colossians 2:15 also states that Jesus disarmed the rulers and authorities and made a public spectacle of them in His victory.
Jesus did not lose at the cross, but triumphed even to the realm of the dead.
Completing the Work of Redemption
Before He died, Jesus said in John 19:30, “It is finished.” This means the work of redemption was completed on the cross.
Therefore, what happened after His death was not an added suffering, but part of the victory that was revealed.
Hebrews 9:12 states that Christ entered once for all and obtained eternal redemption.
Opening the Way to Life
Ephesians 4:8-10 speaks of Christ who “descended to the lower parts of the earth” and then ascended, leading captives with Him.
Many understand this as a picture of Jesus defeating the power of death and opening the way of salvation for humanity.
Hebrews 2:14 says that through His death, Jesus destroyed the one who had the power of death, that is, the devil.
Death is no longer the end for believers because Christ has triumphed.
The Resurrection as Proof of Victory
On the third day, Jesus rose from the dead as recorded in Matthew 28:6, “He is not here; for He is risen.”
This resurrection became proof that death could not hold Him.
1 Corinthians 15:55 says, “O death, where is your victory?”
What happened between death and resurrection points to one thing: Christ’s victory over sin and death.
Conclusion: From Death to Victory
The Bible does not give full details about Jesus’ activity in the realm of the dead, but it gives enough clues to understand its meaning.
Jesus truly died, entered the reality of death, but not to be defeated. He came as the victor.
He declared victory over sin, death, and the powers of darkness, then rose on the third day as Lord over life and death.
In the end, what matters most is not the details of what happened in the realm of the dead, but its meaning: that through Jesus, death has been defeated and eternal life has been opened for humanity.
