Our world is becoming increasingly noisy. From constant notification sounds, opinions on social media, the voice of ambition demanding achievement, to worries whispering “what if I fail?”โall seem to compete to dominate our attention. Amid this noise, how can we hear God’s voice?
God does not shout. He speaks in silence, just as Elijah sought Him on Mount Horeb. In 1 Kings 19:12 it says, “After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.” God’s voice does not come in loudness, but in quiet gentleness.
The challenge is, our lives are rarely quiet. We are often rushed, busy, and exhausted. Therefore, to hear God, we must choose to calm ourselves. It may not be about turning off all external distractions, but about rearranging the priorities of our hearts.
Jesus Himself often withdrew to pray alone, as recorded in Mark 1:35, “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, He got up, left the house, and went off to a solitary place, where He prayed.” If even Jesus needed quiet, how much more do we?
Hearing God’s voice is not a mystical matter. It can happen when we read the Word, when the Holy Spirit strengthens our hearts, or when peace arises without any logical reason. John 10:27 says, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” God wants to speak, but we need to make space to listen.
Today, take a moment. Turn off notifications. Be still. Open your heart. Perhaps it won’t be a loud voice you hear, but guidance, comfort, or a small encouragement that ultimately saves.
