Like Bartimaeus: A Faith That Won’t Be Silent

There is a very touching story in the Gospel of Mark about a blind beggar named Bartimaeus. Although it seems simple, this story holds a great lesson about faith that refuses to be silent. Bartimaeus did not let his condition silence his faith; instead, he cried out even louder to Jesus until he experienced a miracle.

In Mark 10:47-48 it is written, โ€œWhen he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, โ€˜Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!โ€™ Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet. But he shouted all the more, โ€˜Son of David, have mercy on me!โ€™โ€ This is persistent faith, faith that is not afraid of rejection, not ashamed, and does not give up even when pressured by the voices around.

Bartimaeus knew one thing: Jesus was the only hope. If he remained silent, the opportunity could be lost.

True faith is not passive but dares to take action, even if it is considered disturbing or inappropriate. Bartimaeus chose to keep crying out, and Jesus’ response was extraordinary: “Call him!” (Mark 10:49).

Faith that refuses to be silent always attracts God’s attention. Not because God is deaf, but because active faith demonstrates total trust in Him. Just like the woman who had been suffering from bleeding for 12 years, she dared to step forward and touch Jesus’ cloak even though she was considered unclean. That small act was born from living faith, not silent faith.

We often find ourselves in a position like Bartimaeus. There are many “voices” trying to make us silent: voices of doubt, feelings of shame, the devil’s whispers telling us our prayers are in vain, or comments from people who belittle our faith. But true faith will choose to keep crying out to Jesus.

Jesus did not reject that cry. On the contrary, He asked Bartimaeus, “What do you want me to do for you?” And Bartimaeus answered, “Let me see again” (Mark 10:51).

Clear prayer, strong faith, and a heart confident in God’s power produce real answers. Bartimaeus was healed and followed Jesus.

Important lesson: living faith never remains silent, but dares to come to Jesus with genuine longing. Do not let circumstances, shame, or the voice of the world stop you from crying out.

Lord Jesus, teach me to have faith like Bartimaeus, a faith that is not afraid to cry out and does not easily remain silent. Let me continue to come to You with the conviction that You are my only hope. Strengthen my heart so that I do not give up under pressure, but draw closer to You. Amen.
