Life often brings us to confusing situations. There are prayers that remain unanswered, paths that feel blocked, or sufferings that are hard to understand. In moments like these, a question arises in the heart: โDo I still believe even though I do not understand?โ
The Bible records that Job was a figure who was greatly tested in this regard. He lost his wealth, health, and even his family. Nothing about that suffering made sense. Yet, Job still said, โThough He slay me, yet I will hope in Him.โ (Job 13:15). This is a form of faith that does not depend on understanding, but on confidence in who God is.
We are not always called to understand, but we are always called to believe. Proverbs 3:5-6 affirms, โTrust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.โ God knows our limitations, and therefore He invites us to rely on Him, not on our limited logic.
Jesus Himself once gave an extraordinary example.
In the Garden of Gethsemane, He prayed with a heart full of struggle: “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet not as I will, but as You will.” (Matthew 26:39). Jesus chose to trust in the Father’s plan even though the path He had to take was the cross.
Often, when we do not understand, we are tempted to become angry, disappointed, or to turn away from God. Yet it is precisely there that our faith is tested. True faith is not only believing when everything is clear, but also continuing to believe when everything is uncertain. Like a small child who still holds his father’s hand even though he does not know where he is being taken, so should we trust God.
Believing even when we do not understand does not mean closing our eyes to reality, but choosing to believe that God remains sovereign behind the confusing reality. Romans 8:28 affirms, “We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”
Today there may be many things we do not understand. But do not let the limits of our understanding shake our faith.
God does not demand us to always understand; He only asks us to keep believing.
Lord, we often do not understand Your ways, but teach us to keep trusting. Strengthen our faith so that we do not rely on our own understanding, but on Your love and sovereignty. Guide us to remain faithful until the end, even though many things are still unclear to us. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
