Why Do We Always Seek Others’ Approval?

Thirst for Validation: The Quiet Drive Guiding Our Lives

Have you ever felt hesitant to make a decision simply because you were afraid of “what people would say”? Or maybe you felt incredibly happy just because someone praised your post on social media? The desire to be approved, validated, or recognized is deeply rooted in human nature. But why is that? Is it merely a matter of low self-confidence, or is there something deeper?

From Brain to Heart: Validation Is Human

Psychologically, humans are social beings. We are designed to relate and live in groups. Our brains naturally give a “reward” in the form of dopamine hormones every time we receive approval or praise. So it’s no wonder we feel happy when positive comments come, and disappointed or even anxious when rejected.

However, on the other hand, relying too much on others’ approval can make us lose direction. We become easily shaken, afraid to be different, and end up living for others’ expectations, not for God’s purpose.

What Does the Bible Say About Seeking Approval?

The Apostle Paul once said very firmly, “For if I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ” (Galatians 1:10). This verse illustrates that there is a clear boundary between living to please God or living to please people.

Jesus Himself did not live seeking people’s approval. He was loved but also rejected. Yet that did not change His direction. Why? Because He knew who sent Him and to whom He was accountable.

Knowing True Identity: The Key to Overcoming the Thirst for Validation

Often we seek validation because we forget who we truly are. We want praise because we feel not good enough. We want recognition because we feel unseen. But when we realize that we are unconditionally loved by God, the need to always get approval begins to fade.

Psalm 139:14 says, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; wonderful are your works, and my soul knows it very well.” If we truly realize this, then we no longer need to live for the applause of others.

We were not created to please everyone. We were created to please the One who created us.
