Taming the Tongue: A Sign of Spiritual Maturity

There is a small part of the body that often brings a great impact in our lives: the tongue. James writes firmly, “If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless” (James 1:26).

Words can build up, but they can also destroy. Many relationships are broken not because of actions, but because of words. At first glance it seems trivial, yet God evaluates our spiritual maturity by how we speak, or more precisely, how well we can restrain ourselves from saying useless or hurtful things.

Why is restraining the tongue so important in spiritual life?

Because restraining the tongue is a sign that the Holy Spirit is working in our hearts. One of the fruits of the Spirit is self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). When we are able to refrain from retaliating insults, not joining gossip, not venting complaints, it is not because we are great, but because we have learned to obey the leading of the Spirit.

Jesus Himself is the example. When slandered, insulted, even crucified, He did not respond with harsh words. “When He was insulted, He did not retaliate; when He suffered, He made no threats” (1 Peter 2:23). That is not weakness, but extraordinary divine strength.

Certainly this is not easy. There are times when we want to defend ourselves, want to express disappointment, or just want to “vent our hearts.” But it is precisely at those moments that God invites us to be silent and trust that He will defend us.

Spiritual maturity is not only seen from how much we know the Word, but also from how we control our tongue when we are emotional, hurt, or tempted to speak harshly.

Let us train ourselves to listen more and speak with love. Because wise words not only calm others, but also demonstrate the maturity of our faith.
