Growing Spiritually Mature in a Childish World

We live in an increasingly childish world. Everything must be instant, easy, entertaining, and never “too serious.” Even adults often fall into reactive behavior, easily offended, wanting everything quickly, and rejecting the process. Unfortunately, this lifestyle gradually seeps into our spiritual lives as well. Many Christians desire blessings without the cross, anointing without obedience, and ministry without character growth.

But the Bible calls us to become spiritually mature. In 1 Corinthians 13:11, Paul says, “When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became a man, I gave up childish ways.” This is not about age, but about maturity in faith.

Spiritual maturity does not mean knowing many verses or being active in church, but how we respond to life. Do we continue to trust when prayers go unanswered? Do we remain humble when blessed? Can we be patient when misunderstood, or continue to love when unappreciated?

Hebrews 5:14 says, “Solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” This means spiritual maturity is trained. It is not immediate but shaped through process, trials, and perseverance.

God does not call us to grow in outward appearance, but to grow in depth. Ephesians 4:13 emphasizes that we are all called to reach “the full measure of the stature of Christ.” The world may mock, saying, “donโ€™t be too spiritual,” but God seeks those willing to grow consistently and sincerely.

Becoming spiritually mature is a daily process. It begins by choosing obedience even when unpopular, forgiving despite pain, learning humility even when able to defend ourselves, and continuing to serve even without recognition. None of this appeals to the world, but it is precious in Godโ€™s eyes.

So, if you feel like you are swimming against the current of the times, keep moving forward. It is better to be spiritually mature in a childish world than to remain comfortable and never grow. Because it is this maturity that prepares us to fulfill Godโ€™s calling wholeheartedly.
