Spiritual Discipline: A Path to Life, Not a Burden

“Train yourself to be godly. Physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”
(1 Timothy 4:7-8)

Often, the phrase โ€œspiritual disciplineโ€ sounds heavy and intimidating. Like an extra burden in an already tiring day. Reading the Bible every day? Praying early in the morning? Reflecting amidst busyness? It feels impossible, especially when motivation is low.

However, the Bible never defines spiritual discipline as a burden but as training that gives life. Spiritual discipline is not about obligation, but about relationship. Just as loving couples make time for each other, so do we with God. We pray, read the Word, and fast not to check off spiritual tasks, but to draw closer to the One we love.

Like an athlete who trains their body for a long-term goal, we train our spirit to stay focused on eternity. And just as exercise can feel tiring at first but refreshing afterward, so it is with spiritual discipline. It may feel dry at first, but over time we will find true joy within it.

Spiritual discipline is not a burden if we change our perspective. Itโ€™s not about having to do it, but about wanting to because we know that time with God is a need of our soul, not just a routine.

Start small. One chapter of the Bible a day. A short prayer before work. A moment of silence before sleep. No need to be perfect, consistency is what matters. Because what God sees is not the size of your discipline, but a heart longing to know Him more deeply.
